The North Konkan Biodiversity Conservation Corridor is a proposed new green zone, an ecologically sensitive (ESA) corridor area in the North Konkan area of Maharashtra. This area is in the foothills of the northern end of the biodiversity hotspot, the Western Ghats, north of Mumbai.
The aim of the zone is to preserve the natural beauty of the area that so many pilgrims have enjoyed throughout the ages. This will maintain and restore the biodiversity and encourage the environmental protection, natural sustainable development and cultural preservation of the area. Ecologically, it makes sense as the zone connects two existing ecologically sensitive areas to create a wildlife and biodiversity corridor.
Creation of the zone is urgent and essential due to rapid unplanned and unsustainable development fast approaching on all sides. We are instead encouraging green sustainable development through the local NGOs working in a joined-up way integrating with existing government schemes, agriculture, horticulture, village-based industries and sustainable tourism.
